This specialization focuses on the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in fostering economic, social, and environmental change in developing countries.  Students in this program will gain a theoretical and practical background in the challenges and opportunities for deploying ICT infrastructure to enhance development.  The program culminates in a field-based experience where students will implement an innovative ICT project in a developing country as part of a study abroad program, or will execute a project in a rural region or an underprivileged urban region of the United States.

Offered By: The specialization is offered by the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences and the the College of Engineering.  The Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media is the lead administrative unit. Who is the Specialization for?

Students enrolled in bachelor's programs at Michigan State University are eligible to apply for the specialization if they are sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good academic standing.  For additional information on academic and eligibility requirements for the Game Specialization, please visit the CAS Academic and Student Affairs website.

The ICT for Development Specialization is a great complement to our Bachelor of Science in Media & Communication Technology for students concentrating in Information and Communication Technologies.

Eligibility & Applying

 

To apply for the specialization, student must complete a short application describing their interest in the program and any applicable prior courses or work experience.  Applications are due by the second week of the semester before you wish to be admitted (for example, the second week of Fall Semester if you hope to begin in Spring Semester). The application is availabe on the CAS Academic and Student Affairs website.

The department or designee for the ICT for Development specialization must approve the student’s plan of study.
